Escape RoomRiddle #1403
A sign above the vault reads: 'Read the code as three pairs that overlap: digits one and two, digits two and three, and digits three and four. Every pair is a perfect square. Of all the codes that work, ours is the biggest.' What's the four-digit code?
Hint: The two-digit squares are 16, 25, 36, 49, 64 and 81. Each pair has to start with the last digit of the one before.
Answer
8164
Chaining two-digit squares: 16-64-49 gives 1649, 36-64-49 gives 3649, and 81-16-64 gives 8164. Nothing else links three in a row. The biggest is 8164.
